Worked example

Three everyday cases

  1. A 15% discount on ₹2,400: 15 ÷ 100 × 2,400 = ₹360 off, so you pay ₹2,040.
  2. Scoring 45 out of 60: 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.
  3. Rent rising from ₹8,000 to ₹10,000: (10,000 − 8,000) ÷ 8,000 × 100 = a 25% increase.

What the result means

Percentage change is always measured against the starting value, which is why the same gap gives different answers in each direction. Going from 800 to 1,000 is a 25% rise, but going back from 1,000 to 800 is a 20% fall.

The same reason explains why a 50% loss needs a 100% gain to recover: after halving, the base is smaller.

Assumptions

  • Results are shown to up to 8 significant figures, so you can round to whatever your task needs.

Limitations

  • Percentage change from zero is undefined, so the starting value cannot be 0.
  • The difference between two percentages (for example an interest rate moving from 6% to 7%) is usually described in percentage points. That is a 1 percentage point rise, but a 16.67% change.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of marks?

Divide marks obtained by total marks and multiply by 100. 412 out of 500 is 412 ÷ 500 × 100 = 82.4%.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

Percentage points are the plain difference between two percentages. A rate going from 10% to 12% is up 2 percentage points, which is a 20% increase in the rate itself.

How do I add a percentage to a number?

Multiply by (1 + percentage ÷ 100). Adding 18% to 500 gives 500 × 1.18 = 590. The “Total after adding it on” line shows this for you.

Can a percentage be more than 100?

Yes. 150 is 300% of 50, and a price that goes from 50 to 150 has risen by 200%.
